Frank Bell started actively working with wild mustang horses in 1994. In that year he voluntarily worked with inmates at the Canon City Wild Horse Inmate Program, then later demonstrated his techniques at several BLM, (Bureau of Land Management) adoptions. Since that humble beginning in ’94 his reputation has grown to be recognized as one of the foremost authorities in working with wild horses. In September of ‘98 Frank was asked to participate in the first annual Wild Horse Workshop in Antioch, California. Frank insisted on including one of his mentors, John Sharp.
John Sharp, well into his eighties, has likely forgotten more about training horses than most of us will ever know. Sharp’s innovative techniques captivated the gathering. By weeks end most of the clinicians at the Wild Horse Workshop were using a bamboo pole to gentle the wild horses, a strong tribute to Sharp. In this weeklong venue Frank and other chosen clinicians demonstrated their individual skills to novices and first time wild horse owners. Using this format the inexperienced gain valuable knowledge and skills by weeks end. These yearly workshops take place throughout the U.S.A. and are constantly evolving as the trainers actively share knowledge with both the public and each other. As Frank Bell's career unfolds, fascinating opportunities are presenting themselves. His work with inmates and troubled teens is being embraced on many fronts as wild horses are used to help heal humans. The federally funded program Safe Futures had him working with Gros-Ventre and Assiniboine at-risk youth in Northern Montana. His gentle approach is highly applicable to veterinary schools as well as horse shoers. Frank’s Stall-Side-Savvy techniques are actively being embraced by veterinarians throughout the country.
