Ex Race Horses: Spooky Ex Race Horse

Ex Race Horse Spooking Problems From The UK

To Frank,

From reading the articles on your website I have seen that you are a miracle worker! I'm only 16 and have been riding for many years. I meet a bloke through my mum who has just brought a 16.2h Irish sports horse. He is lovely to lead and handle and ride but only in walk! he's an ex racehorse and has so much energy and the owner has put him up for sale. He has spent a lot of money on this horse and has had his teeth, back, saddle, bridle etc checked, but still we haven't found the cause of him bolting off. It's really scary how one minute he's calm and walking then the next he's galloped off and the rider cannot stop him. No one will ride him now and the owner said he doesn't want me riding him because he doesn't want me to get hurt. We have traced his history and all we found out is that he's " apparently dangerous" in traffic (jumps the cars). The reason I am asking if you know anything I can do to help the horse is because the owner wants to get a dealer in and I don't want him to. Fair enough, it's his horse but he could end up for meat or something. Do you think the cause might be because he's been over worked at a young age. Will retirement be a good idea?

Please help, thank you.

Love, Cheryl (UK) xxx

Cheryl,

You need to have a plan the very moment the horse freaks out which is exactly what my whole program is about. If you can learn to take the horse to a safe place where you both feel secure, then you are prepared for most anything. This is called the one rein stop and is absolutely the most important thing you can teach any horse. I use it on all horses every ride. My horses are confident and self assured and we're able to accomplish amazing things as a team of two.  Let me make a couple suggestions. Read my 'Despooking' article on my website. Order two of my videos: My foundation work, 'Discover the Horse You Never Knew' is the place to start with all horses, period. You and your horse will be 80-90% safer after performing my ground exercises. And get  my 'Spooking and Shying' horse training video. That video has helped thousands worldwide. My entire focus is about safety and these exercises will change the way you relate to all horses forever while promoting you and your horse's safety and well being.

Happy Trails and Safe Riding,

Frank Bell

Hello Frank,

My name is Belinda and I'm from Cornwall in the UK, I have an ex race horse – thoroughbred, Irish 15.2, when I began to ride him he always wanted to gallop, and unfortunately had lost a lot of weight so I had to build him up and try to calm him down.  Although perfect to handle he took a while to settle into all the paces rather than only gallop!   I am really happy with him but I have hit a stone wall which was a point you have made on your web site:

" Large groups of horses, loud speakers, flags, etc., all mean go fast to the ex race horse. Help them learn to tolerate these distractions, intelligently. Don’t overload the horse."

We have been to two shows (last summer) and both times it was almost as if I didn’t exist, I could not get his attention at all and he was all over the place either trotting along or not moving an inch.   The shows weren’t huge and it’s a problem because you shouldn’t be there if you are not competing, and until he calms down I wouldn’t like to get in the ring with him.  Do you have any tips for working with him to help us?  We also have a real issue of him wanting to lead constantly when out with other horses.  You mention making him uncomfortable when riding or leading, how can you do this? I don’t use a crop as he has an obvious real fear of it and there must be another way!

Any tips you might have will be greatly appreciated.. you can see some photos of my horse at http://my.monkeygroups.com/racehorsesreunited

Many thanks,

Belinda Waldock

Dear Belinda:

This is not uncommon for ex race horses and that is exactly why I produced my video, Retraining the Race Horse. These horses have a huge propensity to get over-excited at the smallest stimuli, which immediately  sets them off. Therefore you need to create a similar situation at home before heading to the challenges of crowds, loud speakers, flags, and all the hub-bub of events. You need to help him deal with a variety of challenges at home before the BIG EVENT. GET IT? You see, the excitement of crowds etc. is just too much now. Order the video along with my foundation work, Discover the Horse You Never Knew. This will give you the information and tools to help your horse become a calm, self-assured winner.

Happy Trails and Safe Riding!
