Letter Of The Month: July, 2003
Frank,
It has been a long time since I have an opportunity to talk to you. I need to tell you thanks for helping me with understanding horses better. I have used your method for the last year on my horse and my wife's horse and both of them are doing beautifully. I bought a 9 year old mare that had so many bad habits, you just could not count them all. We are riding now without any problems at all and she just gets better with each ride. I can call her to me from anywhere and she is ready to go with me every time. I bought my wife a 1 year old and we started him immediately with your methods, he is now 25 months old and is just amazing. He learns anything that he is shown in just a couple of tries. My wife and I are riding almost everyday and are really enjoying the time we spend with our horses. I will really try again this year in the fall to get in one of the clinics.
My wife and I went and watched a so called " horse trainer" in the summer and we were both disgusted in the way he handled the horses that were brought to him. We watched him with 2 horses and walked out. There is one problem that I have that I cannot seem to work out. My horse will only let my wife or myself ride her or pick up her feet or do anything with her. As long as I am with her the farrier can work on her feet, but if I am not there she will not anyone except my wife near her. My wife's little gelding is the same way, she and I are the only people that they will allow to touch them. Is it something that I have done wrong? Neither horse is a problem with riding with other people and long as no one tries to touch them. Neither horse tries to bite or kick or anything like that, they just shy away from other people. Is this normal?
Thanks again for sharing your method of training. We have watched the videos until they are almost worn out.
Safe Riding from South Mississippi,
Your Friend, James Murry
P.S. Please feel free to share this letter with anyone.
James:
Great hearing from you and congrats on your successes. Sounds to me like your horses are pretty hooked up to you two only. They just need more exposure and to learn that others can be just as nice. What you need to do is coach someone else who can listen and do what you ask of them. Introduce them to your horse and help them apply the early steps of the 7 Steps with you right there. When it's working well, begin to back off and coach from a distance. Then move farther and farther away until you are out of sight. This will have to happen as many times necessary until your horses start accepting others. This will give you a chance to teach/coach others. Most of my students begin exactly this way. When their students achieve results, then you are on your way. Let me hear how it goes.
Safe Riding and Happy Trails,
Frank
