Letter Of The Month: June, 2005
Mr. Bell,
I just wanted to thank you, the other day was one of the most amazing days that I have had. I have written to you before regarding my beautiful 6 years old Appy named Carter, my correspondence up to this points were asking for guidance in dealing with a somewhat high strung and frightened horse and all of your suggestions have been much appreciated. When he first arrived at the stable he was scared to death, lots of white in his eyes and trembling so hard you could see his muscles quiver beneath the blanket he wore, but it was love at first sight for me he is the most beautiful chestnut roan Appy I had ever seen. Everything scared him, fast movements would send him pacing back and forth in his stall. Once we were able to turn him out in the geldings pasture (50 acres of hills) he started to calm down. He never ran from me when I came to see him every day and our riding sessions though short normally went well. There was something though, his uneasiness and what felt like an unwillingness to trust seemed difficult to breech. So my husband bought me your CD knowing how much I wanted to have this horse know that I would never hurt him. (we recently found out that his previous owner had mistreated him thinking him "silly and too hot") She was one who thought the only way to calm him down was by holding food and kicking him. So you see the barriers that we had to cross were tall. Well the other day, I went to see him walking up the hills to the arena where he and 7 or 8 other geldings were laying. I have come upon him laying down in the past and he had always jumped up right away long before I could even get close. But today was different, I didn't want to startle any of them so I quietly talked to all of them, Carter lifted his head out of the warm sand and looked at me. There was a softness in his eyes I had not seen before, he did not jump up but just laid there watching me approach. My heart was beating fast, I slowly approached him kneeling down about a foot from him then slowly moving my way fp\orward until I was sitting in the sand beside him. Carter had let me in, I ran my hands down his face, neck and side. In that instant I knew he no longer looked at me as a threat, with tears running down my face I sat there. Mr. Bell without the techniques I learned from your CD I am not sure how long it would have taken to get to this. Everyday gets better with him and her description of "silly and hot" is far from the horse I am getting to know. Thank you again
Staci Alber and Carter
Dear Frank,
I had to transport 5 horses within the past week. One was a very pushy gelding that was just walking all over his owner when I got there. I took there regular web halter off, put on a rope halter, did the bonding, pressure & release etc.. showed him that he WAS NOT going to walk over me and he immediately minded his manners and even walked right onto my trailer behind me. The next transport I did was a very spooky scared draft mare and her 3 month old colt. Again the mare walked all over her owner actually almost pulling her down one time and I suggested to the owner "why don't you let me take her for you". Again I worked your steps, showed her gently who was the "boss mare" and she calmly walked beside me 1/4 mile down the road to my trailer followed me into the trailer with no problems and the colt hoped right in also. The owner was so happy she was crying! I told her about your training methods and she wants me to come work with the mare once she is settled into her new home. The next was a QH mare and her 4 month old colt that was all in all a pretty well behaved horse. She also had a issue of bullying/pushing around her owner, but after 5 min. of working with her she was nice and polite and loaded like a dream. All of these horses were transported from a horrible farm here in our area that is known for abuse and neglect of their horses (they have 150+ horses all on dry lots and they feed cow hay and bread).
Your system has completely changed the way I see and handle horses (all of course for the better). I hope that you come back to Virginia soon so that I can attend another one of your clinics.
Thanks Again Hollie Alouf Parkway Quarter Horses, Inc.
