Horse Problems

Almost every day someone contacts me about a " problem horse." Often such letters come from someone who had been warned by someone else about ridding themselves of " that dangerous horse" or something similarly worded. The  links shown to the right are to letters from people who have had baffling horse problems that they (and everyone they know), simply could not solve.

Do you have a similar horse problem? Look over the latest list of recent horse problem letters and select any one of them to see if there's a solution to your own horse training problem!

Several decades of working with innumerable problem horses has given me a wealth of experience that I am delighted to share with horse owners. It is for this very reason that I created a " Problem Solving Series" of videos to provide answers to the most vexing of horse training problems. Still, phone and email consulting consume a good part of my day. Throughout this growing list of horse problem letters you may well find the answers to your most difficult challenge if not, let me hear from you and I'll do my best to help you out!

Remember: Make the right thing easy and comfortable for the horse. Conversely, you must make the wrong thing difficult and perhaps even uncomfortable. Most importantly, have your plan and " ammunition" ready. You must react immediately when the unwanted behavior surfaces. If the horse hits the " brick wall" several times, he'll probably stop trying. Above all, be fair!

In the Spirit of the Horse,

Frank Bell

Dear Frank Bell,

Recently we purchased a three year old arabian stallion for our breeding program. We are not new to horses, we have been training and breeding arabian horses for 30 some odd years. Yet, our new stallion was an enigma to us, we could not get him to stop biting.

We tried disiplinary actions, like thumping him under the chin, but because he is a show stallion thumping him under the chin did not deter him. For three weeks we struggled, with no improvement. Finally we decided to use the internet to see if we could find a solution to our horse problem. After searching multiple sites that gave very little information about how to solve horse behavioral problems, we found your web site. We had heard about the horse whisperer, but had never seen much about your methods. So while going through your website, we found the questions people had asked you, and your solutions to their problems.

Your advice about the squirt gun was so interesting and new to us, that we bought squirt guns right away. The moment he tried to bite, or even sniffed to bite, we squirted him in the face and made the "shhhh" noise and backed him 5 to 10 feet quickly.

In one night, we saw major improvement in our problem horse. Thank you so much for the part on your web site where you give advice and solutions to people's horse problems, we could have had a very dangerous horse on our hands.

Thank you, you are an amazing horseman, we will be coming to your clinic that you will be putting on in Corvallis, MT on May 6th and 7th.

Sincerely yours,
Katie Calaway and Calaway's Classic Arabians

Hello Frank

I hope you had a safe journey home and I must just tell you about my baby. I just attended the clinic you held in South Africa with my 15 months old Arabian stallion. It was amazing to see the change in him in the first hour we were started.

He was freak out about the arena, the other horses, all the mirrors and was shivering and so excited!! I battle to keep him under control but thanks to you and Herma I had a change horse by the end of the day. Monday I worked with him and today I wish you were here!!! He is such a clever boy we were doing ballet on the ground and as soon as I drop the rope to take it closer to bump him, he would stop, turn to me, back and jump on his hindquarters to the other side. If I ask him to back he do it without any hesitation and without any pressure, just the word back.

He is so clever and must say I am so proud of him and thanks to you I have so much more control on him, learned to get him out of my space and he loves all the bonding and the attention and love to work. I hope that we will see you back soon and thanks again for a great clinic!!!

Regards
Riana Du Toit - St. Helena Bay South Africa

Hi There

Sorry to take so long before cantacting you but I have been very very busy.

Students are doing exams soon so we are studying a lot.

When my students go on holiday, soon, I will have a more peacefull time to sit and type out the 7 Step Safety System. I have been so pleased with the knowledge you left us. I had such a big smile on my face when Chantelle used her hand towards the horses head/eye to show him to go out on the lunge circle. Something stuck !! Great. I feel more at ease and content - after all, my farther did teach me true horsemanshipp. Somehow many many people have lost that through chasing the ribbons. And so many horses are ruined.

Thank you, again, for opening my eyes. We see so many American trainers showing halter horses here at our nationals and then people think this is the only (new) way of working with horses. We never see the true horseman. Until you came. Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou.

The rain has started. At last. Now after two weeks we will all have green gardens and paddocks.

Keep well. I will stay in touch.

Herma Jansen
