Letter Of The Month: April, 2005
Dear Frank,
I only got interested in horses a year ago, since my daughters adore them and I've always been fascinated by the thrill of exploring trails and parks on a horse's back. I researched everything I needed to know about the kinds of horses there are, their strengths and weaknesses, their vet requirements/needs and I volunteered in the Mustang gentling program and Handicap Kids Ride Therapy Program to get as much exposure and learn the common skills needed to keep a horse healthy, secure and happy. One thing I learned though, to really know a horse, you need to own one.
After purchasing all the necessary equipment needed to keep a horse, I finally decided to purchase a thoroughbred for their beauty, grace, loyalty, intelligence and competitiveness. Not that other horse's are anything less, it's just Off-the-track TB's are quite abundant in my area of California due to the Golden Gate Field race track. It's amazing how race horse owners can be so cold to their "investment" after it hurts itself on the race track. Most of the injured horses end up in the processing plants, a few of them in adoption homes. Since mine almost ended up in the canning factory (his trainer saved him for his gentle personality) I named him "Puppy Chow"! He's 17H bay, born out of a champion parents in Florida.
I feel lucky and privileged having him, although he was very, very green, so am I. That's where Frank Bell came into my life. I needed to train my young horse properly, as well as train myself to be a Trainer. After about two sessions with my horse, he finally learned to "walk on" properly and do a one-rein-stop. He's also more trusting and calmer. There are more things we both need to straighten out, but at least we're heading somewhere.
I found out about Frank Bell after reading about Pat Parelli's course and all those "horse whisperer" guys, and I decided Frank's course seemed to be the most logical, gentlest and safest based on intelligent elimination, considering time and limited funding limitation. After purchasing the course, I found out Frank was right all the way! He was not only right in theory, he was right in his approach and personal philosophy. It's almost spiritual. Just by watching Frank's video over and over again to instill the process in my head, I was able to analyze and discern his inner personality - by way of the video: "The Horse You Never Knew" which WAS TRULY AMAZING from start to finish. I normally question everything I read and hear in this world as a survival instinct, but I find Frank's teachings almost naturally acceptable to my line of thought. That doesn't happen too often with me. I sure would love to attend one of Frank's courses one of these days, just to shake his hands and personally thank him for his HONESTY and INTEGRITY of teaching. I'm sure he's got a few more tricks he can show, to polish me completely.
With Frank's course, there was no beating around the bush, it's short, straightforward and effective - exactly what I needed for the short amount of "quality" time I spend with my horse. I consider the short time I spend with my horse "quality," since we never idle around thinking of what to do, but rather go right into bonding, take/give, intimacy, the dance begins, desensitization, ballet-on-the-ground, then ballet-in-the-saddle. We practice what we missed today for next time followed by riding around the arena. It sure made me feel like I know what I'm doing, since we're always busy practicing each step. Not too bad for a green guy and a green horse. In so doing, I felt good about myself. I even feel confident teaching my 6-yr-old daughter the techniques.
Although not everybody knows/has heard of Frank from where I come from, I would like him to know that he has got one guy here who truly believes in him and his program. After meeting a lot of horse owners here, I found out that a lot of them just "own" the horse - no training, no riding, and just no knowledge of where/what to do in a situation. After a while the poor horse ends up for sale, abandoned, adoption or auctioned. I sure would love to show Frank's simple techniques to anyone here who's interested, just for the pure pleasure of knowing and appreciating their horse better. And this is why I am joining Frank Bell's Accredited Instructor Program. I can't save the world and I don't intend to, but if I can show one guy/gal how to simplify the handling of his/her horse and save his love for it, it would surely save the love/enthusiasm for the animal resulting in another noble creature saved.
